Description
Linux Fedora is a GNU/Linux-based operating system that comes from RedHat. In this article we are going to perform a Fedora 17 Beefy Miracle installation on a virtual machine using VirtualBox VM.
Linux Fedora GNU/Linux Download
This distro can be downloaded from fedoraproject.org here. For our test installation we selected the 64 bit distribution.
VirtualBox VM Configuration
Select New machine on VirtualBox manager and provide a Name for your VM. Choose:
- Type: Linux
- Version: Fedora (64 bit)
And click on Next
Select at least 1024MB to run well:
Keep defaults "Create a virtual hard drive now" and click on Create button
Select VDI and click on Next
Select Dinamically Allocated and click on Next
Modify to reach at least 10GB
Now we have our Linux Fedora 17 machine ready for install, only we need to mount the distribution media CD on the virtual CD. Select your VM and click on Settings, go to Storage on left pane, select the CD and find in your disk the media file. Click OK button
Installing Linux Fedora 17 on VirtualBox VM
First installation screen, select "Install to Hard Drive"
Select your language and click on Next button
Select "Basic Storage Device" and click on Next
An alert is shown, select "Yes, discard any data" this option will use the complete disk
Provide a hostname for the machine and click on Next
Select the time zone
Type and confirm the root password
Select use all space and click on Next button
Confirm write changes to disk to perform the partitioning
Wait while the system is installed
The system is installed, click on Reboot button
First startup
Now the system is configured in GRUB, press enter to start Fedora
First screen of the configuration process, push the Forward button
Click on forward after read the license agreement
Provide a user and click on include in the Add to Administrators group
To keep the system synchronized in date and time, select "Synchronize date and time over the network"
Fedora ask for your hardware information to improve, select if you want to send your profile and click on Finish
Now the system is installed and configured, provide your user and password at the logon screen
And finally the Fedora 17 desktop
